Enzymes have long been used in liquid and powder detergents as well as stain removers, pre-spotters, automatic dishwashing detergents and industrial and institutional (I & I) cleaning products. The benefits of enzyme-enhanced cleaning products include lower wash temperatures, shorter agitation cycles and cleaner fabrics. Aside from these advantages, the use of enzymes in cleaning processes eliminates the necessity for harsher chemicals that have been proven to negatively impact the environment.
All enzymes are proteins that catalyze reactions within the washing cycle. They act on stains as scissors that “cut” the staining ingredients into smaller pieces that are more easily removed from the fabric. Two enzymes commonly used in cleaning applications are protease and amylase. Proteases are necessary to break down and remove protein based stains such as blood, grass, milk, and tomato sauce. Similarly, amylases are necessary to break down and remove starch based stains such as chocolate, gravy, and baby food.
Automatic dishwashing detergent (ADD) enzymes act in a comparable manner to help remove food from the surface of your dishes. As with the addition of enzymes to laundry detergent formulations, numerous benefits can be seen with the addition of enzymes to automatic dishwashing detergents, including lower wash temperatures and shorter cycles. Enzymes used in industrial and institutional cleaning products enjoy many of the same advantages, as do enzyme products used in other applications like dental and medical instrument cleaners, pre-soaks, pre-spotters, and filter membrane cleaning.

WASTEWATER TREATMENT
BIO-CAT also provides enzymes for use in wastewater treatment applications. Enzymes such as lipase, cellulase, amylase, and protease are commonly used in addition to viable bacterial products to eliminate waste items in grease trap cleaners, septic system maintenance products, and wastewater treatment formulas. BIO-CAT carries some pre-formulated products for these applications and we offer enzyme preparations that can be purchased to add to your existing formula.
